Colorful blueberry season shaping up at Rainier
Rainier Fruit Co. continues to supply consumers with the highest quality blueberries grown the Pacific Northwest. Blake Belknap, organic sales manger, said the stage is set for another successful season.
All of Rainier Fruit Co.’s blueberries are farmed organically. Although field buffers are packed as conventional to maintain certification integrity, 95 percent of the company’s volume is organic. This will allow an earlier volume ramp up for our customers. Growing conditions have been ideal, aside from an occasional thunderstorm.”
Now that younger plantings have reached maturation, Belknap said the company’s volume is anticipated to increase roughly 15 percent this season. “Berry sizing as well as quality are outstanding,” he added.
The harvest is already under way and will continue through September. “All of our production is farmed organically,” he went on to say. “We pack the field buffers conventional to maintain certification integrity. So 95 percent of production is packed organic.”
Organic blues are shipped throughout North America under the “Rainier” label. “We are expanding into Asia in a small way,” Belknap continued. “The import regulations differ greatly from country to country.”
Some limited private label programs are also provided.
