Production delays don’t dampen enthusiasm at Cambridge Farms
Although there will be a slight delay to the beginning of the Eastern Shore potato deal for Cambridge Farms Inc., marketing of the quality crop is expected to proceed in an orderly fashion.
“Like most people, the season was delayed somewhat due to cold, wet weather,” said Vice President Ken Gad. “We are maybe five to seven days late. I think they’ve made up time.” He said growers often remind people, “Potatoes are ready when they’re ready. Ninety days is 90 days. One hundred twenty days is 120 days.”
Cambridge, headquartered in Boston, markets reds, whites, yellows and russets. Production typically begins in late June and continues into August. “The price outlook is mixed,” Gad said of the 2015 season, adding that old-crop potatoes are still being marketed from Idaho and other growing regions.
Looking at the Eastern Shore deal, he said, “The quality should be nice. The season will have a relatively good return and steady market for all colors. We are looking forward to being a strong marketing partner” in this year’s deal.
