Alvin Nathel, retired executive of Nathel & Nathel, dead at age 83
Alvin Nathel, age 83, of Boynton Beach, FL, formerly of Jericho, NY, died on May 31, 2015.
Until his retirement in 1992, Nathel was a principal at Nathel & Nathel, a leading produce distributor located on the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market in the Bronx, NY.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Daniel and Fanny Nathel, Nathel was preceded in death by his sister, Norma, and his brother, Stanley. He was also preceded in death first by his beloved wife, Marilyn (Metz) Nathel, and also by his second beloved wife, Barbara (Zippin) Nathel.

He is survived by a brother, Gerald, and sister-in-law, Harriet Nathel.
Nathel was also a devoted father to Deborah Kazan and her husband, Paul, president of Target Interstate Systems, also located on the Hunts Point market, and another daughter, Sharon Mirles. He is also survived by sons Ira Nathel and his wife, Clair, and Sheldon Nathel and his wife, Hiromi.
Ira and Sheldon Nathel now own and operate Nathel & Nathel, carrying on the three-generation family tradition in the produce industry.
Nathel was a cherished grandfather of 12, and a great-grandfather of three.
Funeral services were scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, at noon at Gutterman’s Funeral Home, 8000 Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury, NY, followed by internment at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, NY.
A statement from Nathel & Nathel on Tuesday, June 2, noted that Alvin will be dearly missed and fondly remembered as a good friend and mentor to many in his lifelong career in the produce industry.
Sheldon Nathel told The Produce News, “He was a wonderful mentor to so many people in the produce industry.”
The family will be receiving Shiva calls at 73 McCouns Lane, Old Brookville, NY, on Wednesday, June 3 from 4 to 9 p.m., on Thursday, June 4, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Friday, June 5, from 2 to 5 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital.
Alternatively, donor checks can be mailed to Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407, in memory of Alvin Nathel.
