In early May, Target Interstate Systems Inc., located at Hunts Point Terminal Market in the Bronx, NY, was testing a newly software application developed specifically for the company.
Paul Kazan, company president, told The Produce News that he is very excited about its capabilities.
“Drivers will be able to look at our available loads and secure the load immediately through the system,” explained Kazan. “They can also take photos of the bill and send them through their devices, and they can track payments. It’s totally automatic.”
In addition, the new app will allow Target’s staff, shippers and receivers to see a visual on their own computers or devices on a push-pin type map of precisely where the driver is at any moment, and what’s going on around him.
“If it’s a traffic jam, snow or other inclement weather or a vehicle accident ahead, everyone involved will be able to see the exact situation through their devices,” he said.
He pointed that today the most annoying thing to shippers and receivers is not knowing where their loads are, and not having adequate communication to keep them informed.
Kazan said that every major logistics’ company uses tracking software today, but he wants Target’s new system to go far beyond.
“I want my truckers and customers to have additional information that is helpful in value-added way,” he said. “It can include weather reports, fuel prices and even stock market reports. This app will be far more intuitive than any system in use today, and it will be simple to use.”
Kazan said that currently, hauling for major companies who have sophisticated software puts small truck owners who don’t have it at a disadvantage. The new software will enable them to handle small and half loads.
“Logistics is all about communication,” added Kazan. “The younger generation is really pushing the development of new technology and they’re tuned into everything. We are fortunate to have people like my son, Evan, Donyella Todaro-Bierman, our director of loss prevention and a transportation broker, and other young people on our staff who are keyed into technology.”
In addition to its New York location, Target Interstate has an office in California, South Jersey and two in Florida.
“We’ve expanded our Florida staff, and we’re looking to hire at least three or four more people in the next couple of months,” said Kazan. “Last year was a very strong year for us, and we look forward to this level of growth continuing.”
