Celery, a commodity shipped by the Buurma family as early as 1896, is making a comeback, according to Loren Buurma, a partner in the Willard, OH-based Buurma Farms Inc.
Celery, Napa cabbage and golden beets are being added to Buurma’s 2015 product list. The golden beets will be available in bunches and 25-pound poly bags, Buurma said.
The team at Buurma Farms Inc., based in Willard, OH.Buurma will continue shipping other cabbage varieties. Bok choi, kohlrabi and eggplant are some other interesting vegetable offerings.
The harvest of the broad vegetable line grown, packed and shipped by Buurma was to begin in mid-May.
Radishes will be that first item to be harvested by Buurma this spring. Cilantro, dill and some other herbs will hit the market in the last half of May. By June 1, Buurma will be shipping curly and flat parsley. Beets, collards, kale and green onions are expected to be on the market in mid-June.
Zucchini and yellow squash harvest is expected by June 20-25 and late June will kick off cucumbers, sweet corn, celery and carrots.
Many national chains are Buurma customers and “we sell a lot in the state of Ohio,” he said. “The local market gets bigger and better every year, which we really appreciated.”
This year, Buurma Farms is adding new equipment to expand its icing capabilities for the packinghouse.
