Myrick has sights set on growth
It’s not just great produce and great business relationships that are growing at Myrick Produce this season. The sales team is also growing.
Jimmy Myrick, vice president of Edward L. Myrick Produce in Pompano Beach, FL, said the company added Dan Lapinskas at the beginning of April.
“We are growing and felt we could use another salesman to help to market and move the product,” said Myrick.
Myrick Produce grows green beans, peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, and winter and summer squash. The company has a 1,500-acre facility in Georgia and is optimistic about the upcoming season.
“Barring any weather disasters, we expect to see a good crop for the Georgia deal,” said Myrick, who said he is looking forward to going to the company location in Leslie, GA. “We travel to Georgia when we open our facility on May 15.”
The plan then is to stay until July 15 and then return to Pompano Beach in the middle of summer before returning to Georgia for the fall season.
While the sales team has expanded, the work ethic and strategy remain the same, one of making sure everyone is treated fairly and gets a good deal.
“We work with our main customer base to provide good product in a timely manner,” said Myrick. “People make money on the retail end and farmers make money on their end. Our deals are mutually beneficial to both parties. With the price, volume and timing, you have to have it in your window when you are producing the product.”
Myrick Produce ships everywhere in the United States except California. The volume varies from pallet volume to straight loads, and the company sells to both chain stores and wholesalers. Myrick’s facilities are all Primus Labs-certified.
The company remains a tightly knit family business as it has been since 1972. Ed Myrick (Jimmy’s father) is president. Jerry Myrick (Ed Myrick’s brother and Jimmy’s uncle) also works in the business.
Jimmy Myrick explained that he is a member of the third generation in the produce business. “My grandfather was in a different capacity in the business starting in the 50s. I’m very proud to be part of something my family has built from the bottom and built up to this level.”
Myrick attributes the constant growth the company has seen over the years to honest hard work. He said, “I think we are a very successful small business, getting bigger every day expanding all the time.”
Myrick hopes to continue to build the company. His goals are for Myrick Produce to get bigger and to continue to support the farmers in Florida, Georgia and around the United States.
He plans to keep building and making a name for the family and the company. The New Year has also meant a new personal merger for Jimmy Myrick: He just got married to his girlfriend, Alexandra, on Valentine’s Day 2015.
