Kid’s Choice shipping season to begin early
Kid’s Choice shipping season to begin early
Perfect storm conditions during the current growing season will translate to quality watermelon volume for Kid’s Choice Fresh Produce Inc. “Promotions are running strong,” owner and President Tom Glenos told The Produce News. “Orders are coming in quickly.”
Kid’s Choice has business relationships with growers in Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, Michigan and Texas. The manifest includes both seeded and seedless watermelons as well as the black-rind “Imagination” specialty watermelon and yellow-meat watermelon. The spring/summer deal generally runs from April through October.
The company moves product to retail and foodservice customers. With an eye toward marketing watermelons to moms and kids, Glenos said his company is committed to farming fruit for flavor and shipping at the peak of freshness.
Glenos said weather in Florida has been warmer than usual this season. As a result, he said production will ramp up toward the end of April, somewhat earlier than typical timetables. Consumers can expect to see good volumes of the juicy fruit in the produce department during the Memorial Day holiday.
Watermelons are marketed through the East Coast and Midwest, and Glenos said he is gratified with the positive reception shown for the brand in his distribution areas. With packing facilities in all major production regions, Kid’s Choice can deliver on its commitment to providing customers with watermelons that move from farm to stores in 24 to 48 hours.
