Weis-Buy imports bolster overall manifest, customer satisfaction
For the past five years, Weis-Buy Farms Inc., located in Fort Myers, FL, has placed a strong emphasis on developing its overall programs for fresh fruits and vegetables. “Our efforts have borne fruition,” Owner Chuck Weisinger told The Produce News. “This year in the fall we will add mini-cukes and Roma tomatoes to our import base.
Chuck Weisinger, owner of Weis-Buy Farms Inc.“At present, we are shipping on a 12-months-a-year basis. During the winter and spring, imported produce mixes with the Florida fruits and vegetables available,” he continued. “Our chain store and foodservice business grows each year, and it is all because of the quality of the produce. Truthfully, the produce sells itself.”
Michael Shapiro, part of the company’s sales team, said the ability to source quality fresh produce from U.S. and international growers is critical. “We look for the best deals from the best shippers,” he stated. “Our market changes seasonally. So we’re able to provide fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the year.”
Weis-Buy has a positive marketplace reputation for providing its customers with tomatoes of the highest quality throughout the year. At the current time, tomatoes are being sourced from Florida and Mexico. The company keeps pace with changes in the growing season and associated production regions to ensure it can meet customer expectations for volume and quality.
Shapiro said the company’s “Tropical Jewels” Dominican Republic colored peppers, sold throughout the year, continue to show strong growth. He said the availability of quality peppers has been responsible for Weis-Buy’s growing business in the foodservice sector.
Other commodities currently being moved include cucumbers, squash and eggplant.
The company’s core business revolves around the marketing and handling of fresh Florida produce, which Weisinger said is a successful mix-and-match situation. The company is looking for a good tomato situation this spring, “and hopefully our vine-ripe production will come close to filling demand. This year, our watermelon addition to our resume will add volume to our shipping commodity mix.”
