SEPC golfers to raise money for charity
The Southeast Produce Council will hold its inaugural Terry Vorhees Charity Golf Classic May 4-5 at the Atlanta National Golf Club.
The council held its first charity golf tournament last June, during which it announced that it was renaming the event for Terry Vorhees, its first executive director and one of its founders.
Vorhees, who was battling cancer at the time, was able to view that announcement from his home via a video link. He died July 30.
This year's event will begin with the silent auction preview at 5 p.m. Thursday, followed by the silent auction casino night at 6 p.m. A Cinco de Mayo welcome dinner will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., with live music continuing until 10:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, check-in will take place from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at the National Atlanta Golf Club, a beautiful retreat surrounded by the rolling hills, gentle streams and horse farms of the Crabapple community, according to the SEPC website.
At the conclusion of the tournament, an awards reception will take place from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Last year's event drew about 100 people, according to SEPC Executive Director David Sherrod. "We're hoping for about 125 this year," he told The Produce News March 12. "We think that's about where it'll end up."
The council raised $50,000 last year for the Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital, according to Sherrod, who added, "We're shooting for the same amount this year." The only difference is that funds this time around will go to the Children's Hospital of Atlanta.
"When Terry envisioned this event, he wanted to help a different charity each year," said Sherrod. "And that's what we're going to do."
