In-store care & handling of tulips
• Optimal storage: 34-36 degrees Fahrenheit, with high humidity.
• Handle tulips gently to avoid bruising.
• Place in clean container of cool water containing floral preservative.
• Leave tulips in the sleeve up to four hours prior to opening the sleeve to allow stems to hydrate and strengthen. If a tulip hydrates in a limp position it will maintain the limp form.
• Dehydrated tulips: Only re-cut stems if tulips look dehydrated and do not respond to normal hydration. Dehydrated tulips will appear limp and balmy. Stem ends may appear dry and white instead of green and fleshy.
• Dry storage: If you need to store tulips, keep them upright in the box they are shipped in. If tulips are accidently stored lying on their sides they will start geotropic bending — a natural occurrence of righting themselves to the gravitational pull of the earth. Simply rotate them to allow them to grow the opposite direction.
• Warm environments: Ice can be added to the display bucket in warm situations to ensure the tulips have a nice cool drink.
• Continued growth: Tulips will continue to grow taller as they progress; allow for this in arrangements and vase work.
