Houweling’s Tomatoes continues to reinforce its position as an innovative world-class leader with the addition of its new greenhouse facilities in Mona, UT.
“The Utah expansion is a significant addition to Houweling’s portfolio, as both a year-round supply of USA-grown tomatoes and as a model for sustainable agriculture,” David Bell, chief marketing officer, told The Produce News.

He has been recognized at various levels with awards and accolades highlighting Houweling’s innovations in growing methods and sustainability. Innovations include the patented Ultra Clima Greenhouse design, which has been built around the world and our latest greenhouse farm in Mona. In the case of this farm, we will be growing year-round with the assistance of supplemental lighting in the winter, while the operations heat and carbon dioxide fertilization needs will be obtained through the capture of waste exhaust from an existing natural gas power plant adjacent to the farm site.”
Bell added that continued focus on water conservation enables the company to recirculate 100 percent of excess irrigation water, eliminating runoff and reducing overall fertilizer consumption.
In all, the company farms more than 200 acres in British Columbia, California and Utah.
“Houweling’s primary customer profile is through major retailers, but we maintain strong relationships with top performing wholesale and foodservice customers,” Bell said. “Houweling’s locally grown initiatives will continue to expand with a Utah Grown branding program, complementing the California Grown and British Columbia Grown programs in existence. Additionally, new proprietary varieties are being introduced into a new Heritage Beefsteak item and Houweling’s highly sought after Signature Medley tomato blend.”
