P.D.G. celebrates 30th anniversary
RIO RICO, AZ — This October will mark the 30th anniversary of Rio Rico-based P.D.G. Produce, Inc., which was launched by Paul Guy in 1985.
Early in his career, Guy left his family’s farm east of Cleveland to work on the Cleveland Produce Terminal. One of his shippers was C.J. Prettyman, Inc., in Exmore, VA. Guy joined Prettyman’s sales staff on the Eastern Shore from 1981-85. In that timeframe he developed a loyal clientele that was interested in buying wintertime Mexican vegetables as he expressed an interest in moving to a warmer climate. The rest became history. “Loyal customers have supported me,” he said. “I started as a one-man operation.” But now P.D.G. has a sales staff and its own distribution warehouse.
At P.D.G., “we do all of our own consolidation. We have in and out services for others. We are 98 percent a buying broker,” Guy told The Produce News.
P.D.G. handles all products that come into Nogales. In the summer, the firm is a distributor of Dutch vegetables, which are flown into the East and West Coasts of the United States.
