After a long battle with cancer, Otto Robert (Bob) Matousek, who was a member of the produce industry for about 30 years and who was most recently with Cobbtown, GA-based Plantation Sweets for three years, died July 1 at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility.
Born Oct. 10, 1952, in Homestead, FL, Mr. Matousek resided with his wife of 20 years, Betty Browder Matousek, in Statesboro, GA. An avid bicycle rider, Mr. Matousek rode great distances quite often as a hobby. According to Ronnie Collins, proprietor of Plantation Sweets, "Usually on weekends, he would normally ride a 50-mile run. I can't even imagine riding 50 miles on a bicycle."
Mr. Matousek retired from Plantation Sweets, where he worked in sales, around February due to his deteriorating health. Mr. Collins said, "He was not only an employee, he was a very good friend of mine. I enjoyed him working here. Bob has been in the produce industry for 30 some years and he is well known."
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Martha M. Bruce, his brother, Charles F. Matousek, stepsons, nephews, aunts, uncles and other family members.
Mr. Matousek was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Statesboro. A memorial service was to be held July 8 at the Joiner- Anderson Funeral Home's chapel, and a private internment was planned for a later date.
