Kleinman: television, foodservice spark consumer interest in mushrooms
Alan Kleinman, sales manager at Gourmet’s Finest Mushroom Co. in Kennett Square, PA, said consumers continue to incorporate mushrooms into meal planning. “There are many new trends, and more people are trying mushrooms,” he told The Produce News. “With the advent of television food networks and menu advancements, we are reaching a whole generation of eaters.”

Gourmet’s Finest, which has a strong reputation working with customers in the foodservice sector, is making its entrée into the retail market and rolled out unique mushroom packaging in September. Made of 100 percent recyclable material, it features the company’s Heirloom Taste mushrooms. The mushrooms are left on the bed longer than traditional mushrooms, thereby enhancing the flavor.
The packages offered are handpicked and cut steakhouse slice, a single-serve gourmet stuffing mushroom and the original Kennett Square button.
“We are very excited about the new package as there have not been any major changes in the packaging of mushrooms in 30 years,” said Vice President of Marketing David Ranscht. Packaging includes recipes, history, suggestions and an offer for a free mushroom brush.
Gourmet’s Finest moves commodities from its facilities in Pennsylvania and Michigan, with daily deliveries to major cities, including Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Nashville, Boston and New York.
