Just keep on trucking those flowers
Just keep on trucking those flowers
As kids head back to school this month, many will be singing “The wheels on the bus go round and round,” but for most of the floral industry the song is really “The wheels on the truck go round and round.” With transportation comprising a major component of cost of goods across all sectors of the industry, this month’s Floral Marketing section examines transportation from several different perspectives.
Experts from three major trucking companies share insights into the complexities of transporting fresh flowers. Armellini Express Lines gives an overview of floral transportation, C.H. Robinson explains the importance of maintaining the cold chain, and Prime Transportation discusses trucking company challenges that affect productivity. Additionally, Christine Boldt from AFIF describes processing and distributing floral imports at Miami International Airport. We also present the possibility of eventually shipping flowers by sea in refrigerated containers.
Speaking of challenges, Christmas is rapidly approaching (gulp) so we give you some merchandising tips and a heads-up on trends in containers, sleeves and related bouquet products. And what’s this about poinsettias? Are consumers getting tired of the traditional holiday plant? A couple of floral professionals talk about ways to breathe new life into the Euphorbia pulcherrima.
Finally, there is a plethora of industry trade shows and conventions on the horizon and in the rear view mirror that we preview and recap.
