RPE expecting early September harvest
MONTE VISTA, CO — RPE’s Colorado facility located near Monte Vista will see the start of its 2014 new crop in early September, according to Manager David Tonso.
Tonso, longtime San Luis Valley potato shipper who came to RPE in 2013, heads up a staff of four sales, two customer service reps and two transportation facilitators. Since his arrival, the staff has expanded to handle growing domestic and export accounts.

Customer service representatives are Cristi Martinez and Rebecca Goers, and transportation is handled by Neal Valdez and Trish Floriani.
“We have a very strong staff for potato sales and transportation,” Tonso said, noting that Mexico represents a large portion of RPE’s Colorado business, and the office is bilingual to handle each customer’s needs.
In mid-August Tonso told The Produce News the operation, which represents San Luis Valley’s Metz Potato, Hi-Land Potato and Spud Seller, is looking forward to the new season and expects to move 3 million cwt out of the valley.
“We ship anywhere east of here,” Tonso said of loads leaving the warehouse. “Most of our potatoes go to the Southeast, and Wisconsin RPE does the Northeast.”
He said the Colorado shed also does a substantial local/regional business with its russet, red and yellow volume.
“We’re all looking forward to this coming season,” Tonso said. “Our growers are up some on acreage. A few had some hail damage, and right now we’re a bit behind normal in our growing season. All in all, though, it looks like a good year and a good crop.”
