Vertical integration, consistent quality take SunnyGem to next business level
SunnyGem Produce LLC takes extreme pride in the quality of pomegranates it is growing and marketing from its base of operations in Dinuba, CA. “SunnyGem was started by farmer John Vidovich in 2012 to market fresh pomegranates,” President Brian Haley told The Produce News.
“He planted over 2,000 acres of pomegranates mostly after 2008.” Haley said. “He originally used marketing companies, but as his volume went up, [John made the decision] to start his own company. We wanted to control our market strategy, which is ‘Consistency of Quality’ through vertical integration.”
“We grow, process and sell only the best ‘Wonderful’ variety pomegranates,” SunnyGem’s website states. “We have the perfect blend of soil, water and climate to match the original Mediterranean origin of this unique wonderful fruit. We are the one of the largest growers in USA, providing a high quality, consistent supply you can count on.”
SunnyGem’s pomegranates ranches utilize drip irrigation, the most efficient method of water delivery.
“The owner of SunnyGem saw the value of water when originally buying land,” Haley stated. “Much of our land has good water supply. In fact, the Buena Vista water district where we grow 80 percent of our pomegranates actually auctioned off water this year. “
He went on to say, “In addition to being in good water area, we keep 30 percent to 50 percent of our land fallow to make sure we always have enough water.”
All of the company’s pomegranates are marketed during the fall season.
“Quality is looking very nice,” Haley stated of production in 2014. “We had an ideal set and sizing is running similar to last year. We peak on 22 size.”
Pomegranates are marketed under the “SunnyGem” and “Buena Vista Fresh” labels primarily to retail outlets such as Costco, Sam’s Club, Smart n Final and AWG.
“Sixty-five percent of our crop is sold offshore to South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Australia and Brazil,” he went on to say. “In addition, we ship to Mexico and Canada.”
