Australian citrus in place for early delivery
DNE World Fruit Sales will soon kick off the 2006 summer import season with high-quality Australian citrus. Initial shipments of Aussie Navels will begin June 28.
"Charter loads usually begin shipping July 6," Stu Monaghan, national sales manager for DNE, said in a statement. "This season, early fruit maturity is resulting in the first June startup in the program's history, and DNE is taking advantage of the window with container shipments."
Containers are due to arrive at Long Beach, CA, June 23, giving customers an additional two weeks of program ability. New early varieties of tangerines -- the Amigo and Daisy -- are also on the horizon for this season and are coming in on the front side of the program. Charter vessels with Minneolas will follow close behind with deliveries scheduled for the third week of July. Ellendale mandarins will reach U.S. shores the second week of August, and Honey tangerines will begin during the first week of September.
The Amigo and Daisy tangerines are new varieties that have excellent color, minimal seeds and are easy to peel. DNE will have 5,000 10-kilo cartons available during July.
"Volumes continue to climb each year," Mr. Monaghan said in the statement. "All varieties are up by about 10 percent across the board. We will have 1.8 million cartons of Navels, 400,000 cartons of Minneolas, approximately 100,000 cartons of Ellendales and 25,000 of Murcott tangerines."
Fruit size is comparable to last season. Promotions will be most heavily focused on 72 and 88s at the season's start, and then move up a size in mid-August.
Mr. Monaghan said that DNE has pulled its merchandising programs in-house this year in order to customize retailer promotion programs. Marketing will be directed through DNE's facilities in Fort Pierce, FL, Visalia, CA, and North Brunswick, NJ. The Oppenheimer Group in City of Industry, CA, is the co-marketer on Australian citrus and collaborates with DNE's offices.
"Promotion and advertising dollars will be available to help drive sales for our retail customers," Mr. Monaghan added in the release. "Photos and graphics are also available for promotional purposes as well as for media support."
DNE supports these activities to help increase consumer awareness of great-eating Australian citrus. The company has been the exclusive importer of Australian citrus since 1992. Shipping points this season will be from San Diego and Long Beach, CA.
