PHILADELPHIA — “Our goal is to increase trade between Philadelphia and the world via the port,” Dominic O’Brien said of the World Trade Association of Philadelphia. On Sept. 17 O’Brien’s one-year term as association president will end. Beyond this volunteer duty, O’Brien is the senior marketing representative for the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority.
Clayton Manthorpe, general manager of Folcroft, PA-based CMS Transportation Inc., is the incoming president. He is currently the organization’s first vice president.
O’Brien represented PRPA and WTA in Veracruz, Mexico, with the Ship Philly First trade mission to promote direct ocean trade between Veracruz, located the Gulf of Mexico, and Philadelphia. O’Brien said Pennsylvania last year enjoyed $3 billion in exports to Mexico. A significant amount of this trade could benefit from a direct sea route to Veracruz, he said. Most of the northbound cargo would be fresh Mexican produce, but other refrigerated cargo and other Mexican goods would also benefit from a new sea link.
During O’Brien’s term, WTA meeting topics have included U.S. Customs & Border Protection operations in Philadelphia and a presentation by Chris Koch of the World Shipping Council in Washington, DC, on the global steamship line industry. The German-American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia cooperated with WTA in a logistics panel discussion of trade between Philadelphia and Germany. WTA also held a joint Christmas event with the Women’s International Trade Association and the Maritime Society of the Ports of Philadelphia.
In addition to social events, over the course of eight years WTA has raised $500,000 for the charity group Autism Speaks.
