Van Solkema’s MI crop is strong, despite being late
BYRON CENTER, MI — The Michigan vegetable deal for Van Solkema Produce Inc. is progressing well, according to Todd Van Solkema, chief executive officer of the family business, located here.
The crops “are all about two weeks late,” Van Solkema told The Produce News the first week of June. He said Michigan cabbage shipments would begin about June 20. Squash harvest was expected to begin in mid-June. Radish shipments for Van Solkema started on May 28.
“Carrots are behind, too,” because of cool, wet weather, he added. “We will start August 1, which is two weeks behind.”
Van Solkema strongly believes that he must build the company to be year-round and extend product offerings in order to be successful in the future.
This winter, for the first time, the company shipped produce from Nogales, AZ. Van Solkema also ships Vidalia onions and plans to receive sweet Peruvian onions this year through the Port of Savannah, GA, from mid-August through January.
Van Solkema operates out of its Byron Center facility and prides itself on adding extra value to certain products through a modern pre-packaging operation.
