Florida citrus packers announce strategic operating alliance
Greene River Packing and Leroy Smith Inc. have entered into a strategic operating alliance and will be conducting business as Greene-Smith Packing LLC.
Commencing with the 2014-15 Florida fresh citrus season, the packing operations for both companies will be located at the current Greene River Packing facility in Vero Beach, FL.
"We are very pleased with this operating merger and feels that it positions us well as we navigate through some challenging times in the Florida citrus industry," Pat Rodgers, president of Greene River Packing, said in a press release. "We are excited about the relationship from both a business and personal perspective. Having worked closely with the Smith family for over 20 years, we respect their operating style and their commitment to the Florida citrus industry, and we enjoy a strong personal relationship with the Smiths. This merger will increase efficiencies for both entities as well as addressing continued increased costs. We now have access to increased degreening capacity as well as doubling our cooler space."
Greene River Marketing currently handles North American sales for Leroy Smith Inc., Riverfront Packing and Oslo Citrus.
Smith Trading will continue to handle its export marketing program with established customers throughout Europe and Asia.
"I am very excited and optimistic towards our new venture," Trey Smith, vice president of Leroy Smith Inc. and President of Smith Trading Co., added in the press release. "I am looking forward to working more closely with the Greene organization with confidence and anticipation of an efficient, effective and successful future. Florida's fresh citrus has been declining for the past decade and our new business model is essential for providing our customers with the highest quality Florida citrus while at the same time maximizing our grower returns. I expect to see further consolidation within the Florida citrus industry. It just makes sense to merge two quality operations into one."
Combined, the Greene and Smith families grow approximately 4,500 acres of fresh Florida grapefruit, oranges and tangerines. With a vision for the future, the companies are aggressively planting new acreage within the Indian River growing district.
