Wisconsin Spudmobile exhibit shows depths of state’s potato production
The “Potato-Growing Area” exhibit on the Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association's Spudmobile is celebrating all of the facets of potato production in Wisconsin, the third-largest potato-producing state in the nation. The exhibit also highlights the areas within the state that produce potatoes.
As the fourth and final exhibit visitors see on the driver’s side wall, the display will feature a map of Wisconsin that highlights all the areas contributing to Wisconsin’s potato-producing success.
For example, Langlade, Oneida and Forest counties are responsible for supplying more than 8,000 acres of Wisconsin-certified seed potatoes. And as the state’s No. 1 supplier of fresh potatoes, Portage County grows approximately 17,000 acres alone, which produce almost 8 million hundredweight or just shy of 1 billion pounds of potatoes in one year. Adams, Juneau, Marathon, and Waushara counties also join the list, combining for over 23,000 acres.
“In addition to learning where potatoes come from on this exhibit, people will also be able to get to know some of the growers themselves with their pictures displayed,” WPVGA Director of Promotions Dana Rady said in a press release. “It’s important for people to see the farmers who are committed to putting food on their dinner tables every night.”
The counties listed above will easily stand out in larger font sizes on the exhibit and will also be featured on the map, which will be positioned in front of a blooming Wisconsin potato field. It’s yet another exhibit that displays an enormous amount of education in a creative and fun way, and one that will have visitors leave knowing exactly where their food comes from.
WPVGA is a non-profit organization that represents and promotes state potato and vegetable growers. It currently represents more than 300 members and affiliates. More information is available at www.wisconsinpotatoes.com.
