Quality cherry crop for Borton
Quality cherry crop for Borton
It’s all hands on deck at Borton & Sons Inc., one of Washington’s leading grower-packer-shippers of premium tree fruit. The company is headquartered in Yakima, WA, and the 2014 cherry crop is producing the kind of pre-season excitement that bodes well for a successful marketing year.
Ron Everts, head cherry field man, said conditions during the production season have been great. “Spring has worked to our benefit and provided some of the best growing conditions we’ve seen for cherries,” he told The Produce News.
Borton will market dark sweet strains such as Bings, Vans, Chelans, Lapins, Skeenas, Santinas, Tietons, Bentons, Lamberts, Crystalinas, Sweethearts and Coral Champagnes as well as Rainier cherries. “We are estimating a crop of around 700,000 cases,” said Denny Annen, president of sales and marketing. “This estimate is much higher than last year’s crop, probably more comparable to our 2012 cherry season.”
The harvest is expected to begin around June 5. “Peak season will be late June/early July, and the season will end around July,” he added.
Cherries are shipped to a global customer base. “Export interest [is] high right now with inquiries due to the short supplies available out of California,” said Rob Dresker, Borton’s international sales & marketing director. “We are hoping for a quick start and look to have good movement through the entire season.”
Borton continues to make facilities upgrades to increase packing efficiencies. “We have revamped the front end of our dark sweet cherry line with a fully automated front end that will ensure handling the cherries [more gently] and allow for more consistent flow on the line as well as much higher packing efficiency, leading to an overall more consistent packed box of fruit,” said Eric Borton, vice president of international sales and marketing. “There will also be more quality control staff on hand and additional procedures being implemented this season.”
Borton said new cherry pouch bags will be added this season for dark sweet varieties and Rainiers.
