Excitement for Walla Walla season already palpable at Curry
Customer excitement for Walla Walla sweet onions is starting to build and phones are already ringing at Curry & Co. in Brooks, OR.
Matt Curry“We are already fielding several phone calls on Walla Walla onions, in particular in the Northwest,” President Matt Curry told The Produce News. “It is a favorite regional onion, and it is nationally known as well. Every year, we get calls from retailers eager for the June start date so they can start their promotions. The seasonal excitement of sweet onions, whether it is Walla Walla or Vidalia, always impresses me. I love when I’m driving through the Walla Walla growing region, for example, and I see the roadside signs popping up saying ‘Walla Walla onions available now.’ We share this excitement with them and want our retail partners to share it with their customers as well.”
Curry & Co. is a year-round marketer of sweet onions, and Walla Wallas are an integral part of the company’s program.
Curry continues its exclusive partnership with River Point Farms to market Walla Walla sweet onions under the “Double Sweet” label.
As for conditions during the 2014 growing season, Curry said, “It has been a nice spring. But there have been a few growing challenges, and we feel we will peak on a little smaller-sized onion the first week to 10 days. Then we’ll get into normal sizes in July.”
The harvest is expected to be delayed this year somewhat, ramping up in late June rather than the more typical mid-June start time. “Our Walla Walla onions are available from late June through early and mid-August,” Curry added.
