Malena Produce looks forward to grape pull for Memorial Day
“The grape deal is off to a good, early start,” in the view of importer and distributor Gonzalo Avila, vice president and general manager of Malena Produce, Inc., based in Rio Rico, AZ.
“We will have more volume for the Memorial Day pull than ever,” he said. Avila added that this season the Mexican grape deal “will be spread over more weeks, which is good for all involved.”
Keying the strong marketing position is a very early start, he emphasized.
“Overall, the whole industry is off to an early start,” he continued. “It ranges from being five to ten days early, depending on the area, variety and grower.”
Avila expected that Malena Produce will be “slightly down on Flame production and a little down on Perlettes. In overall volume per acre, we will be down. But, we have more acreage. I think per acre we’ll be down slightly on all main varieties and maybe Sugraones will be down more. That doesn’t mean that we will not have grapes.” He added that the new areas in young vineyards coming into production now “are a lot more productive.”
Malena will start shipping from La Costa about May 3. La Costa is a growing area to the west of Hermosillo on the east coast of the Sea of Cortez. La Costa normally starts shipping Perlettes around May 10-12.
Red Flame shipments out of La Costa will begin for Malena about May 11. Then the firm will move to its early Sugraone deal in the range of May 20-22.
The later fruit in Malena’s grape program will come from areas north of Hermosillo. One of these, Caborca will start shipping Flames about June 2-4. Three weeks later Sugraones will begin. Flames will end in late June and Sugraones may go into early July.
“We are also handling Black Seedless and Red Globes in June,” Avila said. The volume on those varieties will not be as high as other varieties.
