Calixtro expands amid 25th anniversary
RIO RICO, AZ — First opening its doors in May 1989, Calixtro Distributing Co., Inc., located here, is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and its success is showing in a very tangible way.
Frank Calixtro, one of five brothers in the family business, walked The Produce News through a major construction site as the firm expands its warehouse facility from 50,000 square feet to 92,000 square feet.
“Basically, we are brokers,” Calixtro said in describing the firm. “Vegetables and Romas are our primary deal but we have a very short grape deal running a month or a month and a half.”
The expanded warehouse space will serve Calixtro’s interests, and is also available to serve other companies as part of an “in and out service.”
“One advantage for our customers doing business here is they always have a one-stop shop,” he said.
If they have ten pick-ups from Nogales-area produce houses “we can bring them here. We can check the merchandise and book the load. Not everyone can handle all of these products.” The “in and out” services include 2.5 million boxes of grapes a year, he added. Calixtro also buys grapes on the spot market.
The five brothers at Calixtro are Chama, Richard, Charlie, Bob and Frank. Chama started the business and was soon joined by Richard and Charlie. Bob is the youngest brother and has been with the company 15 years. Frank worked elsewhere in the industry until 12 years ago.
The family’s sixth brother, Rene Calixtro, is a produce salesman for J-C Distributing, Inc., in Nogales.
