W.P Produce moving into avocado season
W.P. Produce Corporation has been moving a full line of tropical produce from its operations in Miami, FL, since 1984. The company was created by Founder and Chief Executive Officer Willy Pardo and his daughter, Desiree Morales, who serves as vice president. The company’s commodity manifest includes a broad list of tropical fruits and roots. W.P. Produce has partnerships in place with Florida producers of boniato, Florida avocados, guava and mamey.
Commodities are marketed under the recognized “DESBRY” brand. According to Morales, avocado sales under this brand increased 10 percent this year.
“We are currently in our Green skin avocado season from the Dominican Republic,” Morales told The Produce News. “Our season will go up until April 19.” She noted that difficult weather in Mexico has had an impact on lime imports. “Lime prices have skyrocketed, and we believe this will continue through the month of April.”
W.P. Produce is gearing up to begin its Haitian Mango season, which runs from April through July. “The brand we will be handling is ‘TOTOT,’” Morales stated.
Food safety continues as an important focus. “We have been focusing on obtaining field audit certificates for our produce,” Morales commented. “We are proud to say that our roots from Ecuador and Costa Rica have obtained their GlobalGap certificates this year.”
