Frieda's exclusive specialty artichokes now in season
Frieda's, a leading marketer of specialty produce, based in Los Alamitos, CA, is now offering two specialty artichoke varieties, the Sangria and the Fiore Viola.
Grown in Lompoc, CA, and distributed exclusively by Frieda's, the Sangria artichoke has a deep burgundy color, pointed shape, and meaty leaves with nutty and earthy flavors. The Fiore Viola variety has a deep purple color, round shape and very meaty leaves with a sweeter artichoke flavor. Their striking colors and nutty flavors set them apart from their green relatives. They are excellent sources of fiber, good sources of vitamin C, and rich in folate.
"Just like last spring, we are thrilled to be completely sold out on the jumbo-sized Sangrias," Karen Caplan, president and chief executive officer of Frieda's, said in a press release. "That is just how in-demand these specialty artichokes are. Shoppers have been asking us for these red and purple artichokes all year. They can hardly wait to find them at stores and in restaurants.
"I would recommend making a note in the calendar to pre-order very early next year," added Caplan.
Another favorite artichoke variety, the Fiesole baby purple artichoke, is expected to be available in late March to early April.
