Kitayama Bros. selling direct to mass merchandisers
Kitayama Bros. Inc. in Watsonville, CA, announced on its company website that it has diversified into selling directly to mass merchandisers.
“For most of our history we have relied on wholesale florists as our main market,” Robert Kitayama, chief executive officer and president of the company, said in a statement on the website. “We still hold a large percentage and have great relationships with the leading wholesale florists in the U.S., but in order to increase our flower production we had to be able to increase our customer base.”
KB has been growing and shipping cut flowers from Northern California since 1948.
The company has a million square feet of greenhouses where it grows 20 different kinds of flowers and cut greens. Its most popular varieties are oriental and Asiatic lilies, gerberas, irises, mini callas, lisianthus, snapdragons, gardenias and stephanotis.
The company hired Karen Nakamura two years ago as its mass-market division manager. She has had extensive experience working for, and selling to, many of the country’s mass merchandisers and large retailers such as Safeway, Vons, Gelsons, Raleys and Krogers. One of her challenges was to build a production team at KB.
“KB is working to build the right mix of wholesale florists, bouquet makers and large retailers to guarantee a bright future. We plan to continue to increase our flower production, and being able to service all large sectors of the industry is a major part of this plan,” said Kitayama.
