Gradual and safe growth paying for SCC
NOGALES, AZ — “Gradual and safe growth” has been the business approach for Sergio Chamberlain, president of SCC Fresh LLC, since he launched the company four years ago. Still, “we grow more and more each year,” he said. SCC Fresh handles Mexican produce entering McAllen, TX, as well as Nogales, but Nogales represents “a huge portion” of company sales. “We have a cold storage in McAllen” for some produce shipments.
Chamberlain has been in the produce business for 25 years.
SCC Fresh works with five growers to distribute Mexican hard squash, particularly Butternut and Acorn squash, as well as field-grown cherry and grape tomatoes.
“We really concentrate on cherry and grape tomatoes, but we also handle Italian squash, cucumbers and honeydew. We will start a Maradol papaya program in March.”
All of SCC’s products are Primus-certified for food safety. “It is a must. All of our growers have certifications,” Chamberlain said.
Most of SCC’s customers are in the United States. These customers are on terminal markets but also involve some retailers.
SCC’s Nogales warehouse leases space to other shippers in the summer months.
Working with Chamberlain on the SCC sales desk is Jose Vasquez.
Chamberlain was born in Nogales and served in the U.S. Navy from 1983 to 1989, taking part in three West Pacific cruises.
