Plants take center stage in midst of winter
Old Man Winter has had an unusually strong grip on the country this year. While northerners were dealing with snow and brutally cold weather, plant growers from around the country gathered Jan. 22-24 in warm Fort Lauderdale, FL, for the annual Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition. It was an outstanding event that brought together growers, sellers and buyers from all over the world. We have the on-the-scene report of what took place, who the players were and a pictorial tour of the event.
Some of the 400 exhibits filling the 200,000-square-foot floor of the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL, for this year’s Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition. With plants now making up about 40 percent of the live product sold in supermarket floral centers, it is appropriate to take an in-depth look at the plant sector. In this issue, we have a feature section spotlighting orchids and their role in the mass market. It includes information about current trends, products and news. We trace the growth of that sector of the plant industry, and look at where it is today and where the market is headed. Maxwell Sherer from Just Add Ice writes about the business aspects of selling orchids and how to improve margins and profitability. We also have practical information about the care and handling of orchid plants.
Looking ahead to the March issue of Floral Marketing in The Produce News, we will shift our focus to the spring flower holidays of Easter, Administrative Assistants Day and Mother’s Day. In 2014 those three holidays are all within a few weeks of each other, so planning will be critical to maximize your profitability.
Please continue to share your comments and ideas so we remain a relevant source of news and information for the ever-changing floral industry.
