Abate Fetel pears promoted at New York City event
Anna Weiss and Charlotte Cutler of Race-West Co.European Flavors, which supports promotional efforts for European produce in other countries, offered the first sampling of the newly introduced Abate Fetel pears at the New York Produce Show last December in collaboration with A.J. Trucco. The pear was extremely well received.
On Jan. 30, European Flavors furthered its promotional campaign on the Abate Fetel pear with a tasting held at Ai Fiori Restaurant in the Langham Place Hotel in New York City.
Named after Abbè Fetel, a French abbot who developed the variety in the mid-1800s, Abate Fetel pears are grown in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy, where perfect growing conditions combine with centuries of experience to create the most popular pear in Italy.

It is also considered one of the finest varieties of pears in the world. The fruit is tall and slim with a russet-tinged green exterior. They boast a sweet aromatic flavor that, from its high sugar content, is a sweet and juicy treat.
The European Flavors program started in 2008 with kiwifruit sales in the United States, which are also distributed by A.J. Trucco. The Abate Fetel pear is the second product being sold in the United States with the support of European Flavors.
At the pear tasting on Jan. 30, a drawing for a trip to Italy was won by Vic Savanello of Allegiance Retail Services, headquartered in Iselin, NJ.
Several retailers were also in attendance at the event including D'Agostino Supermarkets. Distributors such as Bozzuto's, based in Cheshire, CT, and brokerage firms, including Race West in Clarks Summit, PA, were also on hand to sample the pear.
