RPE Colorado seeing steady volume and good quality
From his Monte Vista-area office, David Tonso, general manager of RPE Colorado, said 2013’s San Luis Valley crop continues to ship in “steady volume and with good quality.”
Tonso, who took the GM position in July 2013, oversees RPE’s Colorado office at Hi-Land Potato Co., where spuds from Metz Potato Co. and Spud Seller are also packed and shipped.
“We’re seeing an annual volume of 2.5 million hundredweight, mostly russets,” he said, adding that the operation also ships reds, yellows and some colored specialty varieties.
Tonso“We’re primarily direct to retail, with some to foodservice,” he said. “We’re also supplying some regional institutional, and we export to Mexico as well.”
RPE pack options include “everything from three-pound bags to one-ton totes,” he said. “We provide tray packs and microwavable wraps, and we offer organics, too.”
The office, which is undergoing remodeling, has a staff made up San Luis Valley potato veterans.
“We’ve doubled our staff since July and now have Matt Glowczewski, Darren White and Cameron Oliver in sales,” he said. “In transportation we have Matt Falbo and Neil Valdez, and our customer service reps are Christi Martinez and Rebecca Gores. And our grower-warehouse rep is Megan Mattive.”
Tonso said main issues facing the potato industry continue to be food safety, with expanding regulations and requirements and water.
“Water in this area is now a determining factor,” Tonso said. “It’s no longer just a concern.”
