Skyline Potato moving quality product to regional customers
This season, Skyline Potato Co., located in Center, CO, plans to move approximately 1.4 million hundredweight of potatoes from the San Luis Valley.
“Quality is good,” General Manager Les Alderete told The Produce News. “Not as nice as past years, but we see no problems being able to ship all season.”

The company markets a variety of russets to its customer base, comprised of retailers and wholesalers. Approximately a quarter of its overall volume is sold to processors.
Alderete said about 2 percent of Skyline’s overall volume is comprised of organic red potatoes.
Product size profile is down when compared to last season. “We have a more marketable size profile this year: 60-90 count and consumer sizes,” Alderete said.
Spuds are primarily marketed under the “Skyline” and “Green Giant” labels to customers in the Midwest and Southeast. Some potatoes are also moved into Mexico.
On the food-safety side, Alderete said, “All three of our sheds are Primus GSF audit certified.”
