Two new hires at Crown Jewels Marketing
FRESNO, CA -- Crown Jewels Marketing & Distribution, here, has recently expanded its staff with the addition of Robbie Mathias and Leslie Telles, both of whom come from families that are heavily involved in the U.S. produce business.
Mr. Mathias is the son of Rob Mathias, president of Crown Jewels. Another uncle, Ryan Mathias, also works for Crown Jewels. Another uncle, Rodney Mathias, works for a tomato company, and his grandfather, Rich Mathias, is a buyer for Sobey's.
Before coming to work for Crown Jewels, Mr. Mathias spent four-and-a-half years with Sam's Club, initially as a store-level produce supervisor before moving up to a merchandising manager position in Sacramento. But he told The Produce News that he has spent his whole life around produce, often going to the office with his father. "I always thought from a young age this is where I would end up and where I wanted to go," he said. "I feel fortunate because not everyone gets to do what they dreamed of doing at a young age."
Currently, Mr. Mathias is primarily involved in shipping and receiving, and he will be working into a sales position. "Right now I'm just learning the ropes," he said.
Ms. Telles said that she first became involved in the produce business in 1988 through her husband's family, who were the owners of Tri-Produce. In 1990, she began "running the citrus house" at Tri Citrus in Porterville, CA, and has been "involved in it ever since." She is now working at Crown Jewels "on sales and helping them get their citrus operation, their new packinghouse, up and running," she said.
"My whole family is involved in the citrus business," Ms. Telles said. Her husband, Jay Telles, continues to be involved in the ownership of Tri Citrus, her brother, Tony Lombardi, owns Porterville Citrus in Terra Bella, CA, and her sister-in-law, Carrie Lombardi, works in sales at Bee Sweet Citrus in Fowler, CA.
