Sergio Lara and Mark Meyer in the onion storage warehouse of M&J Farms, Kearney, NE. The operation, started by Dr. Mark Meyer in 1982, also produces row crops for cattle feed. Raised on a family farm where his father also grew row crops, Dr. Meyer added onions to his own manifest in the mid-1980s.
As his title indicates, Dr. Meyer also practices medicine full-time and is an orthopedic surgeon whose practice is located in O’Neill, NE, in the northern part of the state. A licensed pilot, he commutes from his Kearney farm to his office.
Handling farm operations for him is Sergio Lara, a 2013 graduate from the University of Nebraska Kearney.
Lara said this year’s onion crop is now in storage, and the Vaquero variety sized up well.
“The onions look really good,” he said, adding that M&J Farms is looking to expand its sales territory.
