Heat to affect 20/20 potato production
20/20 Produce, headquartered in Heyburn, ID, anticipates a reduced potato volume this season directly attributed to weather.
Tom Wason, president of 20/20 Produce, is looking for crop sizes to be down approximately 7 percent this season.
“We definitely had some heat stress,” he told The Produce News in early September.
“Yields are expected to be average. Again, the heat will have a mixed consistency on overall crop values,” he said.
Burbanks, he went on to say, “may be on the large size and a little rough. However, the second set should be nice. Norkotah will have limited sizing up North. But overall, they should be normal.”
The harvest ramped up on Aug. 15 and will end on Oct. 15. Potatoes are marketed to foodservice customers under the “20/20” label.
On the facilities side, Wason said some new sorting lines have been installed.
