Imports give Cal Giant seamless transitions
California Giant Berry Farms, headquartered in Watsonville, CA, has developed solid imported berry programs that complement its domestic production. The company is a volume producer of fresh and organic berries.
“We are still harvesting blackberries in Santa Maria [California] and will transition to Mexico next month,” said Director of Marketing Cindy Jewell. “Our season in Mexico will run all through the winter into next spring, when California starts in mid-2014.” Jewell said sizing, quality and flavor are very good from the production area. “We have had great feedback from consumers on our Mexican blackberry program and look forward to that season kicking in very soon,” she stated.
California Giant imports blueberries form South America. “Our season in South America does begin in the fall but is very dependent on the weather in that region,” she commented. “Realistically, we can expect real volume closer to October. We are looking forward to a great quality season from this region.”
During November, California Giant and Concord Foods will partner in a special blueberry promotion. “This is run primarily through our social media channels challenging consumers to develop unique recipes with our fresh blueberries and Concord muffin mixes,” Jewell said.
The company’s Mexican strawberry program begins in November and will run through the spring of 2014. “This region is a tremendous complement to our program in Southern California and in Florida to get us through the winter season with high-quality fruit,” Jewell stated.
