MountainKing Potatoes acquires Canon Potato
This past June, MountainKing Potatoes, headquartered in Houston, TX, acquired Canon Potato, located in Colorado’s San Luis Valley. John Pope, vice president of sales & marketing, said the decision facilitates continued growth and improved supply and service levels to MountainKing’s existing customer base.
“[The acquisition] improves our company’s ability to grow and expand our baseline core business while penetrating profitable business within the Intermountain regional markets such as Denver, Salt Lake and Phoenix,” he told The Produce News.
MountainKing will ramp up its valley potato harvest beginning Sept. 15 and ending Oct. 5. “We will have excellent supplies of butter reds, butter golds, butter russets, regular russets, roasters and jumbo russets,” Pope stated.
The outlook is excellent for early season jumbo promotions followed by high volume holiday ads on highly-valued varieties such as butter golds and butter reds.
Potatoes are marketed under the “MountainKing” label to customers in the Southeast, Midwest, Southwest and Intermountain region.
Pope said a portion of the crop will be exported to Mexico.
