PAIA releases category management plan
The Peruvian Asparagus Importer's Association has released its 2013-14 Category Management Plan Outline for Fresh Peruvian Asparagus, which provides fresh-market asparagus consumption key demographics and suggestions regarding displays, as well as promotional and advertising ideas that offer retailers strategies to increase sales of Peruvian asparagus.
According to the outline, fresh asparagus continues to be a high-volume U.S. import, with more than 413 million pounds imported or consumed throughout the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Peru remains a principal supplier to the U.S. market, representing over nearly half of the total U.S. Import Dollar Value for asparagus.
The Category Management Plan indicates that per-capita consumption within the asparagus category has remained consistent and increasing since 2003 with a spike beginning in 2010. USDA data reveal that consumption remained strong throughout 2012.
"We promote the Category Management Plan Outline for Fresh Peruvian Asparagus with the goal of providing statistics, trends and strategies that will equip retailers and the industry at large to sell more asparagus," Priscilla Lleras, coordinator of the PAIA, said in a press release. "The outline contains the necessary summary information of the health benefits, value and convenience of fresh Peruvian asparagus."
The association will focus even greater efforts in 2013 on spreading the positive word to industry trade press, supermarkets and consumers concerning the benefits of fresh asparagus through articles, advertisements, direct-communication and trade show participation. The association anticipates increasing consumption and demand for fresh asparagus in 2013.
