Country Sweet Produce bolsters facilities and increases organic onion acreage
Country Sweet Produce is a fairly young marketing company that continues to make strides every year to improve the quality and efficiency of delivering every type of onion to the industry. Country Sweet is a sister company to Valpredo Farms, longtime Bakersfield vegetable growers.
“We will be shipping onions of all colors and all sizes, all summer long in conventional, organic and sweet onions,” Country Sweet Produce President Michael Valpredo said.
By adding acreage to the organic program, Country Sweet will also be shipping organic onions through August.
“We’re in full swing with our onion program as of June 4,” Country Sweet Sales Manager Duke Dodder said. “I’m very pleased with the quality across the board — reds, yellows, whites, organic, conventional and sweets. We have the right varieties and have had a great growing season. The organic market has been exceptional and the conventional market has been very strong, as well.”
Country Sweet added a new vertical bagger for the Bako Sweet Onions to deliver packaging the retail market is looking for. They are shipping two-pound, three-pound and five-pound bags in the high-graphic mesh bag.
“It has predominately been an East Coast packaging style and we are trying to bring it to the West Coast, “ Dodder said. “We keep updating our facilities every year to improve internal efficiencies and final quality.”
“This has been another step forward with the progress in the facility,” Valpredo added.
Country Sweet also refurbished their cold-storage space with added insulation to improve storage throughout the summer.
