New York Apple Association launches commissary apple display contest
The New York Apple Association in Fishers, NY, announced the launch of its annual contest for defense commissaries, which encourages creating big displays of New York-grown apples.
"Over the years, we've worked closely with the Defense Commissary Agency to encourage [it] to promote New York apples in the commissaries," said David McClurg, vice president of marketing for the association.
The contest asks commissaries to construct apple displays that identify or mention New York state apples or use the NYAA's "Apple Country" logo. Displays must include a minimum of three apple varieties, either bagged or bulk. Apple varieties to be used are McIntosh, Empire, Gala, Jonagold, Crispin, Red Delicious, Rome, Cortland and any other New York state variety that the commissary chooses. New York's apple crop this fall was one of the better ones, with high sugar content in the fruit due to an abundance of sunshine throughout the growing season.
The contest runs from Jan. 30 to March 4. The display must be up for a minimum of three weeks, and entries are due by April 4. This contest is open to any U.S. DeCA commissaries that choose to participate.
Entries will be judged on the creative use of display materials, originality and sales appeal. Entrants are asked to send the details of the results of the promotion such as sales increases or increase in cases sold, Mr. McClurg said.
Four winning entries will be chosen to receive a 48-inch euro display table for their produce departments.
"We are pleased to be working with DeCA as we have over the past years in this display contest that has helped move so many of our apples in the winter months," Mr. McClurg said.
