M & R Tomato continues to be a rock-solid generational family business
M & R Tomato Distributors Inc., located on the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Cooperative Market in the Bronx, NY, offers a full line of fresh, high-quality produce.
The company specializes in gas green tomatoes, roma tomatoes, cherry and grape tomatoes, and it also handles vine-ripened and greenhouse tomatoes. In addition to tomatoes, it handles potatoes, onions, citrus, lettuce, peppers, squash, eggplant and more.
Denise Goodman is the vice president of M&R Tomato Distributors. She partners with her brother, Michael Tambor, in overseeing the company’s operations.
Last year, Ms. Goodman’s daughter, Lisa Vogl, joined the company, and she represents the third generation in the family business.
Ms. Goodman said that seasonal movement on the East Coast was running a little late this year.
“But things tend to catch up quickly, especially as New Jersey starts coming on,” she said. “These slower movements can make the market a bit tighter and drive prices up somewhat, but the opposite happens when you have beautiful growing conditions. When that occurs there tends to be gluts and that drives prices down. It is all about supply and demand.”
M&R Tomato Distributors is highly service oriented. Its tomato repacking department provides its customers who demand the best with the finest repacks.
“All of our products come from the finest shippers, and we carry premier labels, such as ‘Dole’ and ‘Foxy,’ so that we can provide customers with the best quality,” Ms. Goodman noted.
The company was started by Milton Tambor, Ms. Goodman’s uncle, and Jack Tambor, her father, in the early 1950s at the Washington Street Market in Manhattan. In 1958, Jack Tambor took over and expanded the business.
Over the years, M & R Tomato Distributors developed an impeccable reputation for quality, honesty and fairness, and it quickly became a leader in the tomato industry.
“When the Hunts Point Market was built in the Bronx, we relocated to it,” Ms. Goodman said.
“This market is an integral part of the largest produce market in the world. In the 1970s, my generation became involved and we have evolved with it ever since. Now Lisa is with us, and it is very nice to see another generation on board with us,” she added.
Since joining her family business, Ms. Vogl has been working in every aspect to learn everything possible about the produce business. She works in administration on the upper floor, as well as learning about inventory and product handling on the platform floor. She also works with shippers.
Ms. Vogl is a graduate of Dartmouth College, and she holds a degree in marketing research.
Ms. Goodman said the company takes pride in its fundamental values and reputation.
“Our family worked very hard to achieve our position in the industry, and our reputation for quality, fairness and integrity continues to make M & R Tomato what it is today. We value our relationships with both our customers and suppliers.”
