L&M: North Carolina crops will be strong in volume and quality
L&M Cos.’ North Carolina crops got off to a bit of a challenging start this year.
Brock Christian, product manager for the Raleigh, NC-headquartered L&M, said that the company produces cucumbers, bell peppers, eggplant and squashes in Clinton, NC.
“The weather in the state has been cold, wet and overcast for the past two to three weeks,” he said May 6. “The forecast now predicts that warmer weather is coming this weekend, and it should bring on good growing conditions.”
Brock Christian, product manager for L&M Cos., with Tracy Pope of Pope & Son Inc., a grower-partner in North Carolina. He added that as of early May the pepper plants were still very young and about 45 days away from harvesting. He anticipated that squashes and cucumber plants were 20 days to 25 days from the beginning of harvest.
Yields, volumes and quality of the North Carolina crop were looking very good in early May, but Mr. Christian pointed out that everything was growing very slowly because of the bad weather conditions in the state recently.
L&M Cos. has a long and highly respected history in the produce industry. Its founder, Joe McGee, partnered with his friend, Bob Logan, to form the company in 1964.
It is only natural that the company would always remain loyal to local farmers. The company is proud of the farmers it works with and features them on its website, www.lmcompanies.com. In addition to its own farms and local growing partners, the company has grower relationships across the United States and in Mexico.
“We are very involved in locally grown programs and we support our customers in whatever ways help to best educate consumers about where their produce comes from,” said Mr. Christian.
“Our L&M farms and growers have rich histories that we share proudly at in-store promotions, and we provide our customers with grower stories, photos and point-of-sale displays to help them educate their customers,” he said.
The company produces a wide range of products including field vegetables, potatoes and onions, apples, pears, cherries and citrus.
L&M delivers commitment from the ground up. Rooted in a foundation of respect, passion, leadership and excellence, it holds itself to the highest levels of integrity.
