Legend Produce expands Origami cantaloupe program

Legend Produce, a leading grower and marketer of melons, has been working diligently with its partners for the past few months to expand its exclusive Origami cantaloupe melon program. The multi-generation grower-shipper expects volume to increase by roughly 30 percent compared to last season, as it continues to promote the Origami cantaloupe across new and existing markets.

Production has already kicked off for the spring season in Yuma, AZ, with a great size profile, high Brix and the exceptional flavor that has come to be expected from the Origami melon.

“We are so excited to add more volume to our program this spring and to expand existing relationships while also creating new ones. We are extremely grateful to be able to count on the support of our customers during these challenging times,” said Barry Zwillinger, owner of Legend Produce. “Over the years, we have invested a lot of time and money in finding varieties that yield a melon we know we would want to take home to our own families.

"We signed an exclusivity agreement with Harris Moran, now HM-Clause, as soon as the potential  of the Origami cantaloupe was discovered thanks to an overwhelmingly positive response from buyers and consumers alike,” he said. “We haven’t looked back since, and we continue to get calls from people who pick up the melon from stores across the country and fall in love with it. Those calls make my day and are a validation of all the hard work our team puts in every day to ensure our customers are serviced and their needs are met.”

The Origami has continued to increase in popularity among retailers, processors and wholesalers searching for a distinct melon that delivers on the promise of flavor, color and aroma. The variety is a full slip, western-shipper style cantaloupe with a high sugar content, a deep orange color, an extended shelf life and both a small seed cavity and thinner rind that gives shoppers (and processors) more bang for their buck.

“Some of our customers request that we ship only the Origami cantaloupe because of the success they have had in their stores and with their customers. I really think that if given a chance, this melon could have a significant role in increasing consumption in the category,” said Zwillinger. “We want to make sure all our customers are able to showcase this melon and trust us when we say there isn’t anything in the marketplace like it.”

Legend Produce will continue to promote its full range of melons available year-round from its Scottsdale, AZ; Dallas; and northern Kentucky sales offices.
