Wada Farms sees strong season for onions and potatoes
Wada Farms is seeing strong momentum across its potato and onion programs, supported by favorable growing conditions, solid storage quality and ongoing investment in sustainability and value-added solutions.
With extensive grower partnerships throughout key production regions, the company continues to build on its longstanding reputation as a leader in both commodities.
“The season is shaping up well and both potatoes and onions are performing reliably from a supply and quality standpoint,” said Eric Beck, director of marketing for the Idaho Falls, ID-based company. “We grow a range of potato varieties, including Russet, red and yellow potatoes, and our onion program features yellow, red and white onions. The 2025 storage season is in a positive position as it relates to surety of supplies and quality.”
Both retail and foodservice sectors continue to see strong and steady demand, particularly for versatile pack sizes and formats that offer convenience and day-to-day manageability. While traditional varieties remain the core of consumer purchasing patterns, Beck noted newer resilient varieties are gaining interest among customers looking for consistent yield, flavor and reliability.
“Smaller consumer pack sizes remain popular, especially for family meals and for those meal-planning on a week-to-week basis,” he said. “Variety preferences are leaning toward trusted types, balanced by interest in resilient varieties that offer consistent yield and quality.”
Weather and field conditions were generally cooperative this year, allowing Wada Farms to implement crop management practices that supported strong yields and helped ensure uniformity heading into storage. Harvest timing was adjusted to optimize maturity and storability, which will support continuity of supply well into the storage season.
“Our team closely monitored the 2025 crop, and harvest timing was carefully adjusted to ensure optimal maturity and storability,” Beck said. “This has helped us deliver consistent quality to our customers.”
Maintaining that quality during storage and distribution remains a priority, particularly given ongoing logistics and cost pressures affecting the industry. Wada Farms utilizes advanced storage systems, with precise temperature and humidity control, to extend freshness and maintain product integrity.
“Our shipping programs are designed to minimize handling and transit times, ensuring that quality is maintained throughout the entire supply chain,” Beck said.
Sustainability is a foundational commitment for the company, reflected in water-efficient irrigation, soil-health practices and packaging initiatives aimed at recyclability and waste reduction.
“We invest in water-efficient irrigation systems and soil health practices that promote nutrient cycling,” Beck said. “Our packaging initiatives aim to reduce waste and improve recyclability. These efforts help support the long-term viability of our farms while responsibly serving our customers.”
Value-added products continue to expand as consumers seek convenience in meal preparation. Beck cited strong performance in microwaveable and small bite-size potato offerings designed for quick preparation and portion flexibility.
“Consumer trends toward simplicity and time-saving solutions are at the core of the value-added category,” he said. “Wada has a diverse portfolio of value-added offerings that serve retailers’ evolving needs.”
Partnership with retail customers is central to Wada Farms’ category approach, with active collaboration on merchandising, consumer education and strategic planning. Clear and consistent branding reinforces product identity in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
“Strong branding helps us differentiate Wada Farms,” Beck said. “Our focus on quality, consistency and sustainability reinforces consumer trust.”
Looking ahead, the company is actively exploring new varieties, regional opportunities and innovations designed to support growth while maintaining responsible stewardship.
“Our future initiatives will focus on sustainable practices, capacity building and innovation,” Beck said. “We are committed to steady, responsible growth in the years to come.”
