Market Minute: Peppers still in the running for promotional ads
Every day a surprise comes into the produce view. Did you know peppers are botanically classified as a fruit? That’s because they contain tiny seeds that grow from the flower of the pepper plant.
The heatless Bell peppers, colored sweet peppers, mini peppers are simply “peppers.” The hot spicy peppers are called “chili” peppers. The chili peppers are thought to have evolved some 15 million years ago. However, new research has dated them to be about 50 million years old.
The current market on green Bell peppers is steady with a moderate demand; the quality is very good. Eastern and western areas are in good supply of green Bell peppers as fall gets going.
The colored Bell pepper supplies have improved with orange being lighter. Canada has a good stable supply of colored peppers, and the quality is excellent.
Mexico and California have good supplies of mixed chili peppers. The mini sweet peppers are also available out of California.
This is a good time to get in a nice promotional ad with all varieties of peppers. Go over a plan with your pepper suppliers and capture those available sales with a nice colorful display on an endcap fixture.
