Market Minute: Excellent California stone fruit crop expected

Here comes the summer fruit. Start planning to see some outstanding California stone fruit this year. An ample supply of exquisite quality cherries, peaches, nectarines, apricots and plums is expected for ad promotions.stone fruit

This calls for some nice attractive and aggressive summer fruit displays. The fruit is slowly arriving but will begin to ramp up by the middle to the end of May into June. This is good timing to launch early ad promotions and onward through the summer months.

  • Apricots: The supply will increase rapidly on a very good crop this year.
  • Cherries: There will be some outstanding quality large size cherries.
  • Peaches: Yellow and white peaches are shipping now and the quality is excellent.
  • Nectarines: There is a good supply arriving and ready for displays.
  • Plums: Supplies will ramp up in June and the product quality will be excellent.

Check with your stone fruit suppliers to see when sufficient quantities will be available for some early ad promotions.

Peru remains important source for Pacific Produce

This year, the avocado market has seen record volumes from Mexico and a third straight year of California eclipsing the 300 million-pound mark, so there is no shortage of fruit for the U.S. market.

That has led to a slow start for Peru, according to Isabel Tavera, vice president of Pacific Produce, who told The Produce News on May 25 that just 194 containers of Peruvian avocados had shipped to date compared to 1,124 containers the same time last year.
