Market Minute: Broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus markets tight, good demand
The big three cooking vegetables — broccoli, cauliflower and asparagus — are always very popular, especially during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
The current California supply of broccoli and cauliflower is limited with some gaps boosting the market prices. We can anticipate a lighter supply out of the early desert deal due to heavy rain storms at the time of planting.
Mexican asparagus fields have experienced some weather-related challenges as well that slowed production, but product out of Peru has increased.
- Broccoli: The market is down a bit. Supplies are limited and demand is active to some extent in various production areas.
- Broccoli crowns and florets: Demand is good and active. Market is higher as supply is lighter.
- Cauliflower: The market is higher as demand exceeds supply in both Salinas and Santa Maria.
- Asparagus: Markets are very active. Recent weather conditions in growing areas slowed production volume out of Mexico. Production from Peru is increasing. The jumbo and extra large size market is higher. Quality is excellent out of both shipping areas — promotable item.
Make sure to communicate with your suppliers in planning these items for your present ad promotions and the Thanksgiving holiday down the road. Your suppliers are your best means of guiding you in the right direction.
