Amazon Fresh closures include Whole Foods conversions
Amazon plans on closing 14 stores under the Amazon Fresh brand and converting five to the Whole Foods Market brand. The company said the plans will enable it to provide customers with expanded options for shopping by expanding online grocery delivery options with more selection at faster speeds.
Today, millions of customers already shop with Amazon for affordable household essentials and groceries, including a wide and varied selection of more than 2 million grocery and household essentials items — from cleaning and beauty products to fresh produce, dairy and meat.
"In response to strong customer demand, we are working hard to add more grocery selection online and expand our delivery services to new areas," the company said. "By early next year, we plan to more than double the number of Amazon UK Prime members who have access to three or more online grocery delivery options through our partners Morrisons, Iceland, Co-op and Gopuff, allowing them more ways to shop. With the expansion, more than 80 percent of UK Prime members will be able to shop at least one of our grocery partners."
According to a report from PwC’s Strategy&, by 2030, Britons are expected to conduct over 25% of their food spending online. Britain is the world's third largest online grocery marketplace in terms of sales, demonstrating how UK shoppers are embracing the convenience of online grocery delivery, according to the Institute of Grocery Distribution.
Amazon UK’s growth in the grocery category is outpacing the rest of its U.K. business. In light of the positive customer response, in 2026, Amazon plans to make grocery shopping even more convenient by introducing perishable groceries alongside millions of everyday essentials and other products on Amazon.co.uk with Same-Day Delivery. This service, which recently launched in the U.S., will offer customers fresh grocery items, including fresh produce, dairy, meat, seafood, baked goods and frozen foods.
